Co-Designing Social Events

I’ve worked alongside my classmate Jenny Chen and Professor Ayako Takase to create two recurring social events.  We put care into making events and corresponding workshop materials to encourage respectful and meaningful interactions, while incorporating moments of discovery and play. We built in elements of archiving and displaying information ensuring that the content is accessible after the events come to an end.

An annual opportunity to get together with community members to talk about our collective values, think about how we currently practice them, and ideate on new ways to practice and support our values.

This 2.5 hour workshop was developed alongside my classmate Jenny Chen as part of my graduate thesis work. After running several trial workshops, we ran the community values workshop with 25 RISD Masters of Industrial Design community members.

Resource Soup

A monthly hour long low pressure resourcing event. It’s a space for community members to safely ask and answer questions that might not otherwise be brought up.

Community members anonymously write down questions (or comments) and add them to a bowl. One question at a time is pulled out and read out loud. The group then addresses that question in an open table discussion. Sharing helpful answers and providing support.

Lasting Change in a Predominately Transitory System

Thanks to administrative support, running these social events is going to be part of a paid  graduate assistantship role in the future. The community values workshop will run annually, so that the values on display in the studio are a representation of the current community. And Resource Soup will run on a monthly basis. Workshop artifacts and promotional posters will help reinforce these rituals. We created a website for the events that includes digital archives, workshop instructions, and accompanying Slide Decks.
