Reflections
As Co-Director of a volunteer-based non-profit I learned and worked through a number of challenges. For me, the role reinforced the importance of active communication and making asks explicit. One of the challenges I often reflect on is how to create opportunities for growth in the backstage of a volunteer led organization. I had believed that having a say in designing and building a skatepark is exciting, however the financial, bureaucratic, and strategic work is much less appealing. Over time I learned that the barrier wasn’t that the work wasn’t exciting, it was that volunteers didn’t know when and how to navigate the non-profit. By making our needs, roles and responsibilities clear to the community, Transitional Spaces was able to grow.
